Text: Exodus 6:1-8

I. What's in a Name?
  • Genesis 2:4 is first time Lord is used-"self-existent, eternal"
  • Matthew 4:10-"supreme in authority"
  • Psalm 68:4-JAH-sacred name-"the Lord most vehement" (Exodus 6:3, Psalm 83:18, Isaiah 12:2, 26:4)
II. In the Bible?
  • Over 7,000 times (1st time Genesis 2:4, last time Revelations 22:21)
  • In every book except Esther, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, I and III John.
  • In all but ten Psalms.
  • In almost every verse of Psalm 118.
III. The Lord and Me?
  • The Lord has done this for me (just in Romans)
    • justified me by faith, given me peace (5:1)
    • given me joy in my atonement (5:11)
    • made me alive unto God (6:11)
    • given me eternal life (6:23)
    • keeps me in the love of God (8:38-39)
    • saved me (10:9, 13)
    • makes me His (14:8)
  • We as Christians need to do these for the Lord
    • serve the Lord (Rom 12:11)
    • put him on (Rom 13:14)
    • live or die for Him (Rom 14:8)
    • bow my knee and confess with my tongue (Rom 14:11)
    • glorify Him (Rom 15:6)
    • praise Him, laud Him extol, lift up (Rom 15:11)
    • love Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength                                                       (Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30, Luke 10:27)
  • Psalms 138:2
    • Yes, the Lord is self-existent
    • Yes, the Lord is supreme in authority
    • Yes, the Lord is most vehement
    • And yes, the Lord has given us His Word, His truth, to be magnified above his name. Why?
      • so that by his word He can make Himself known to us
      • so that by his word we can trust Him
      • so that by his word in this relationship, the Lord will never change Who He is.
Challenge:

  1. Whenever you read "Lord" in your Bible, see Him as self-existent and eternal, as your supreme authority.
  2. Thank Him for creating you, considering you, and for having a plan for you.
  3. Trust Him as the Lord He has been, for the Lord He is, and for the Lord He always will be.
