Bible Study-Psalms 23 (The Shepherd Psalms) PART 3

Text: Psalms 23:3

The Shepherd's Leading

  • As a Shepherd always goes ahead of his flock, so also does Jesus stay in front of those who trust and love them.
  • We must be willing to be led. (John 10:14)
  • We procure special blessings for believing although we see him not.
  • We need the grace to wait to be led. God is all-powerful but he does not overrule our will. We can know the will of God for our lives. (Lam 3:25, Psal 37:7, Psal 59:9, Isa 30:18, Isa 40:31, Psal 62:5)
-Leading us in Gods business: (Psa 32:8, Deut 32:11-12, Psa 139:9-10)

-Jesus can lead us by still waters but sometimes also through foaming torrent, up the stony mountain track through the valley of the shadow of death, etc. (Isa 43:2)

-God has a purpose for us: Det 8:2, Jer 29:11, Psa 40:5

-We must trust God because he leads us through the right paths.
-Christ's ways are along "Paths of righteousness" when we despair as we go through rough times, let's remember: Psal 103:14

-Path's through which God leads us: Psal 16:11, 119:35, 25:10, 31:3, 66:11, Prov 2:8-9, 4:11, Isa 2:3, 26:7, Jer 42:3

-We do not need to plead with God to lead us. He pledged to do so for his "namesake" God's name denotes his character so he guarantees to lead us in the right way.

He is:
WONDERFUL: his power will overrule everything for our highest good.
COUNSELOR: his wisdom will work all things out.
THE MIGHTY GOD: he will do nothing inconsistent with his divine integrity.
THE EVERLASTING FATHER: he loves his children.
THE PRINCE OF PEACE: he became peace for us.

Bible Study-Psalms 23 (The Shepherd Psalms) PART 2

Text: Psalms 23:3

He Restoreth my Soul:

  • To restore the soul is to revive or quicken.
  • These are more precious words, we would have no need for restoration.
Causes:
  1. Negligence in reading the word of God and private communion. We skim his word and barely pray. (Revelation 1:3, Psalms 119:176, 1 The 5:17)
  2. Unconfessed sin, we tend to imitate Adam  & Eve by hiding our sins. There can be no fellowship between God and us when we don't confess our sins. (Prov 28:13, Jer 3:22, Joh 2:16, Jer 30:17, Isa 57:18, Hos 14:4, Psa 51:12, Mic 7:20)
  3. The influence of the world. It's impossible for us to spend so much time in the world without losing something. However, the Lord can protect our hearts and souls if we are in tune with him. (Joh 17:15)
  4. Neglect of some known command. (Eph 4:30, 1 The 5:19, Jam 4:17)
    • Ways we can be restored: The world (nature) around us is full of restoration processes. Likewise, God uses many ways to restore u. Jesus our good shepherd restored the soul of Peter through various stages: praying for him warning him, turning and looking at him, sending him a message by the angel on the resurrection day and lastly restoring him. (Luk 22:32, Joh 21:15-17)
    • Restoration is ours to appropriate, let us not wait for days or weeks to pass before we turn to our savior for restoration. (Joel 2:25, Psal 40:5, Psal 139:17)
