Book Review-Redeeming Love

Redeeming Love (Francine Rivers)

California gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep. Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside. Then she meets Michael Hosea. A man who seeks his Father's heart in everything, Michael obeys God's call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel's every bitter expectation, until, despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw. But with her unexpected softening come overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband's pursuing love, terrified of the truth she no longer can deny. Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael does. . . the One who will never let her go.

Book Review-Man, Myth, Messiah

MAN MYTH MESSIAH (Rice Broocks)

Answering history's greatest question, DID JESUS REALLY EXIST? Is there real historical evidence that demonstrates that He lived and actually said and did the things the Gospels record? Is there any validity to the speculative claims that the Jesus story was a myth, borrowed from a variety of pagan cultures in the ancient world? In his follow-up to the bestselling God's Not Dead-inspiration for the movie of the same name-Rice Broocks now looks at the evidence for the historical Jesus and exposes the notions of skeptics that Jesus was a contrived figure of ancient mythology. Man, Myth, Messiah also establishes the reliability of the Gospels as evidence for the resurrection, validating Jesus identity as the promised Messiah.

Bible Study - Nature Walk

Text: Psalms 104:24
- Have you ever been on a nature walk?
- Here are a few things we might find along the trail that we can learn from.

BROWN  LEAF:
When you pick up a brown leaf, it usually just crunches and falls apart if you handle it too much. Why? because it is dead, there is no life in it. As Christians, we were all dead in sin before we met Christ. By accepting him, we have that color and life added to us. It's not just a temporal life, but eternal. And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins. (Eph 2:1) quickened; made alive; revived; reinvigorated.

RED LEAF:
Those red leaves in the fall are so pretty. The red letter edition of the KJV has words Jesus spoke while on earth. Christ said some wonderful things for us to think on. The parables and his teachings are full of rick lessons? Luke 8-The parables of the sower Luke 16, the rich man and the beggar, Mark 11 the lesson of the FIG TREE. (Luke 21:33 (words), Luke 21:34 (hearts, unawares))

YELLOW LEAF:
I love all those yellow and golden leaves, none of those leaves start out with these pretty fall colors. They start out green. Getting to the red, orange, yellow, and gold colors is a process. Getting to that gold in us is a process too. Sometimes the Lord has to bring us through some trying things in our lives to get us there. We have health issues, family issues, job issues, life issues, etc. (Job 23:10, way, take, gold)

FEATHER:
Psalms 91:4 shield, bucker
Buckler-noun a kind of shield or piece of defensive armor, anciently used in war. It was composed of wood, or wickers are woven together, covered with skin or leather, fortified with plates of brass or other metal, and worn on the left arm. On the middle was an umbo, boss or prominence very useful in causing stone and darts to glance off. The buckler often was four feet long and covered the whole body.

  • Rock: 2 Sam 22:2, Luk 6:48 rock (How is your foundation?)
  • Pinecone: Have you ever just grabbed and picked up a pinecone? is pickers (Eph 4:31-32 forgiving, God, Forgiven), Eph 4:29 (Edifying, hearers), Eph 4:30
  • Twig: This reminds me of what CHRIST said in John 15, "I am the vine." we are an extension of him. We each veer off into all different directions and have different tasks, but we are part of Christ and depend on him (John 15:5 nothing)
  • Acorn: Look at what grows because of an acorn. The mighty oak tree. We think of those as one of the bigger and stronger trees. They are so rutted to the grown. (Col 2:7 rooted, established)
CONCLUSION: we forget to just look out at the countryside and see all the beauty that God created. Sometimes we forget to reflect on those daily blessings as well, like remembering how dead we were in sins and how Christ gave us new life. We forget to reflect on how the Lord brings us through those trials to bring out the gold. How about you, today will you stop & reflect on all that God has created around you?.... the earth is full of thy riches. (Psalms 104:24)

Book Review-Love your Life not THEIRS

Love your Life NOT Theirs (Rachel Cruze)

From #1 New York Times bestselling author with Dave Ramsey, comparison steals your joy and your paycheck. Life can look pretty good for everyone in your social media feed, but if you look a little closer, you might find some surprises hidden beneath that glossy exterior. Credit card bills, student loans, car payments, and an out-of-control mortgage may be crippling some people. Their money situation might be a mess, and they could be trying to live a life they simply can't afford. So why exactly do we try so hard to keep up with the image they portray to the world?

Book Review-In His Steps

IN HIS STEPS (Charles M. Sheldon)

Sometimes the answer to one question changes everything

When Rev. Henry Maxwell asked the members of his small church to pledge not to do anything, whether significant or mundane, without first asking themselves the question "What would Jesus do?" he had no idea what the next year would bring. Neither did those who agreed to this seemingly easy task. One by one, their lives would change. But what they never anticipated was how their entire town would be affected. Now the novel that has changed millions of lives can change yours as well. Discover this classic story for yourself and find out why the words penned more than a century ago are more powerful than ever.

CHARLES M. SHELDON was a pastor in 1896 when he chose to preach one Sunday night on the question "What would Jesus do?" A sermon became a series, that became an article, that became a book, that became a movement. And the book has sold over 30 million copies.

Bible Study-God can use you

Text: Joshua 1

Have you ever wanted to be used by God?
God uses people who realize they are weak vs 6, 7, 9, 18

  • Moses was gone, now God had raised up Joshua to lead the people of Israel and he hardly felt adequate for the task.
  • it isn't a bad thing to discover that we are weak. In fact, it is quite good (2 Chro 7:14)
God uses people who are faithful.
  • Joshua had been Moses minister (Jos 1:1-2)
  • Joshua was the man who was there to help Moses get the job done. He had been born in Egypt and, along with Caleb, would be the only Israelite from the great Exodus to survived the wilderness wandering and make it into the promised land.
  • Joshua was a faithful man and a worthy successor to Moses.
God uses people who study and live by his word. (Joshua 1:8, depart, mouth, meditate, observe, prosperous.

God uses the person who is patient and waits on his timing. (Joshua 1:11 giveth, possess)
  • Why do we sometimes in our lives have to go around and around. We know what we should do, but we want to do it our way. Finally, we decided to try it God's way.
  • We need to learn to wait on God's timing because there are a time and a way to do what God calls us to do. We see this is how God used Joshua in the battle of Jericho in Joshua 6.
God uses the person who cares about lost souls.
  • There was a lost soul to be saved before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, and her name was Rahab.
  • Joshua 2:1 (faith was growing)
  • Joshua 2:10 (we have hand)
  • Joshua 2:11 (heard, Lord.
  • Every soul is precious to God. God always cares about individuals, and so should we.
  • Deut 4:29 (find, seek, heart)
God uses the person who sets himself or herself apart.
  • Joshua 3:5 (sanctify, apart)
God uses the person who knows how to work with others.
  • Joshua 1:10-15
  • Joshua 1:16 (sendest)
  • Joshua 1:17 (harkened, all, with.
  • Joshua was communicating with the people he was leading, and he was encouraging them.
  • How about you are you willing to be used for God?
  • Is there something you already know God can use you to do? Are you doing what he has for you?

Bible Study-Here is my Cup

Text: Heb 13:19-22

Chipped or Whole
Ecc 3:1 (season, purpose)

Psa 40:1-3

  • Heard
  • Mury, Feet, Established
  • New, Trust
I love that song that talks about Jesus being our friend.
What a friend we have in Jesus all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forget it, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
  • Clean or Dirty
  • Psalm 51:10 (clean spirit)
  • John 16:33 (peace, tribulation, empty or full)
  • Luke 4:4 (bread, word)
    • The chorus to fill my cup (Richard E. Blanchard)
    • Decorative or Practical
    • But what about us as Christians?
    • Will we hold up with use?
    • How strong is our faith?
  • Hebrew 11, has many great faith heroes such as Abel, Cain, Enoch, Noah, Moses, Abraham & Sara. We also are capable of such big things for God but our faith has to be strong. Strong faith helps us survive the weight of this world.
  • Heb 11:1 substance, evidence
  • Heb 12:2 Jesus
  • Luk 17:5 Increase
    • If the apostles asked the Lord to increase their faith how much more should we be asking? Increase my faith, Lord.
  • Seasonal or Everyday
    • Remember what Paul told Timothy?
  • 2 Timothy 4:2 season, season
    • we can attend church each week & still end up a "seasonal" Christian, only really serving the Lord when we see fit, when we feel like it, or when there's an activity going on at our church that we feel like participating in.
Conclusion: so what kind of cup are you? Phi 1:6 begin, perform, day.

-Spend more time soaking in the word.
-Schedule your time to spend reading the word.

"And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil and had the legion sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind and they were afraid." (Mar 5:15, Mat 4:23)

Bible Study-Beat the Heat

Text: Psalms 121:5

The world can get us overheated at times.

  • People and issues that come up in our own lives can get us all worked up.
-Spend time in the shade.

  • The Lord protects us (Psa 121)

"The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night." (Psa 121:5, 6)

-Hydrate

  • The next thing to do to cool off is to stay hydrated.
"As the hart Panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul Thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? (Psa 42:1-2)

-Hart/deer, panteth/long for desire, thirsteth/dryness-painful desire.

  • This week as I read in the scriptures I noticed answers to how I should and should not react in certain situations. God's word is light and instruction for our daily life.
"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee; my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is (Psa 63:1, 63:1-3)
  • How David thirsted after God. Sometimes we can let our life get to the point where we are nat in his word and not trusting God. How sad and unfortunate. If we would just pant after God and his word. Stay in church, stay in the Word, and refresh ourselves daily. Be in prayer, talk to God. He is there with you (Heb 13:5)
-Slow down
  • Just slowing down can help us cool off (Jam 1:16-22)
"Wherefore my beloved brethren let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." (Jam 1:19)

-Wrath/anger, superfluity/abundance
-Fan yourself
  • Allowing the Holy Spirit to work in you (Eph 3:13-19)
"That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man." (Eph 3:16)

-Avoid strenuous activity
  • What kind of things dehydrates us as Christians? what keeps us from reaching our full potential when it comes to serving Christ? Sin will burn you. Make your decisions ahead of time.
"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful. who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1 Cor 10:13)

Conclusion: Do we expose ourselves to the extreme heat of sin? I know I need to get in and cool off in the shade. I need that cooling off and lifting up that only Christ can give. Let's all work on getting out of the heat and spending some time with Jesus in the shade.

Bible Study - Change Happens

Text: Romans 8:28

  • Change is something that we all go through.
  • Here are some people in the Bible who went through a change.
    • Ruth Chapter 1
    • Ruth 4:13
  • Mary, the Mother of Jesus - Mat 1:16-25.
  • Paul
    • Acts 9:1-6
    • Acts 16:37
  • Joseph
    • Genesis 39:20-21
    • Genesis 39:2
  • Job
    • 2:7, 40:1, 42:10-12, 16:20-21, 42:1-2.
Conclusion:

* Change can be hard. On the other hand, some changes can be easy but in the end, we can learn from it. Sometimes it helps make us stronger. Sometimes we look back and see how God worked through it and brought a blessing.

* Other times though, we don't know why we had to endure change. Sometimes we can't see God's plan and sometimes we never will know why he worked in a certain way.

* Change will happen. In the end, all we can do is trust the Lord and allow his moving and leading because we have known that God always has a plan.

Romans 8:28

So, what have you learned from change?

Bible Study-Avoiding the three Step Downward Progression

Text: Psalms 1:1

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."

The Psalmist is giving us the character, condition, and position of a godly person. The Christian's character is governed by the rules she chooses to follow.

We live in the world (John 17:15) and are surrounded by unsaved people who are described by three characters: ungodly, sinners and scornful.

Ungodly people are those who cast off the fear of God and live daily by neglecting him. As time goes on the ungodly not only puts aside fearing God, they become sinners by breaking out into open rebellion against God and engage in the service of sin and satan. Omitting God out of one's life leaves a vacuum that leads to hardening of one's heart, which makes one become scornful. The scornful openly defy all that is sacred, scoffs at religion and makes a mockery of sin. This is how inequity leads one downhill. Sinners themselves become tempters to others and advocates for the devil.

Walk: acting on the principles of unrighteousness, the righteous must say not to the advice of the ungodly (Psa 119:15) the righteous looks at these people with pity, and they are a constant vexation to her soul. The righteous do not do what they say they are not who the righteous calls for advice (Luk 23:51)

Stand: cultivating the way of the sinner, the righteous do not stand in the way of sinners; she avoids doing as they do. The sinner's way is not good (Psa 36:4) The righteous should not imitate them nor choose to be their closest companions. The righteous should not stand in their way to be picked up b them (Pro 7:8) their way must be feared (Prov 4:14-15, Isa 59:8)

Sit: permanently confirming to the conduct of the wicked (Jer 15:16-21, Tit 2:11-12) The righteous do not sit in the seat of the scornful; she does not repose of rest (comfortable) with those that are secure in their wickedness and are pleased with their lifestyle. The righteaous does not sit in open condemnation of those who are God's children. An example is the seat of a drunkard is scornful (Psa 69:12, Hos 7:5, Mat 7:13, Heb 13:9)

Bible Study-Psalms 23 (The Shepherd Psalms) PART 6

Text: Psalms 23:6

Celestial Escort to the House of the Lord:

  • "All the days" there are many days that will come in our lives: spring days, autumn days, winter days, birthdays, death-days, winter days, sick days, etc. Through all these days we will have goodness and mercy two personified attributes of God following us.
  • Good and Mercy: The two go together (Psal 100:5) "The Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting" God's goodness is vast: (Psa 34:8, Zech 9:17) Mercy is his delight (Mic 7:18) his wealth (Eph 2:4) he is rich in mercy; his throne "I will commune with thee from off the mercy seat" (Exo 25:22, Luk 6:36)
  • The Shepherd goes before us while mercy and truth follow to protect us from our foes. The word "follow" could also imply that God's mercy and truth follow his wandering children. He does not break off his kindness and his faithfulness. They continue for "His mercy endureth forever" (Chro 16:34, Psa 106:1)
  • "Surely," the psalmist says, why so sure? because our God is unchangeable and everlasting: he cannot withdraw what he has once given. (2 Tim 2:13, Rom 11:29, Jam 1:17)
  • "Surely" because God has never failed in the past. He has pledged himself by exceeding great and precious promises (Psa 73:1) says "Truly God is good. . ." so he sustains us each day (Deut 33:25)
  • With each passing year, our hearts seek a permanent dwelling place. So when the lesson is learned and our school bell rings, we will go home to "the house of the Lord" which Jesus says (Joh 14:2)
  • Because of our faith in Christ and being sealed with the Holy Spirit, we believe Jesus words (Joh 14:3) and we can affirm these lines, "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." But before we get there, the Lord's house can also be possible here. David also seemed to enjoy heaven before he got there (Psa 27:4, 91:1) David did dwell in the house of the Lord. He dwelt in the presence of God, by habitually recognizing the all-loving, all-encompassing presence of God. Like him, we don't have to wait to "enter the gates of the city"
  • May the Holy Spirit make real to each of us this possibility of living in the house of the Lord hourly and daily. Our shepherd leads us to green pastures, so we cannot hunger, beside still waters so that we cannot thirst.
  • Two ways we live: positionally and experientially we are seated in heavenly places in Christs thats our position. We must make a choice to live by faith and be victorious each day through the spirit (experientially) (Eph 1:19)
