Psalm 90: The Plan B Prayer Lesson 9: "How Long"

Introduction: "Return, O LORD, how long? And let it repent thee concerning thy servants." (Psalms 90:13)

Text: II Samuel 12:9-24
Repent is to be sorry and change your mind or course. God would never change Who He is, but He does change His mind. . .
  1. Why Would God Repent?
    • He remembers His promises (Exodus 32:13)
    • He is gracious, slow to anger, and of great kindness (Joel 2:13b)
    • To deliver and defend His people for His own sake (II Kings 20:6)
    • So that we "perish not" (Jonah 3:9)
  2. What Must I Do to Get God to "Repent"?
    • Believe God (Jonah 3:5)
    • Turn to God (Joel 2:12-13a)
    • Beseech God (II Kings 20:3)
    • Fast, weep, mourn, "rend" your heart (open it wide to receive God's will and way)
    • Be humble
    • Turn from the evil way
    • Walk before God in truth, and do what is right in His sight.
  3. What Do I Do in the Meantime? (II Samuel 12:13)
    • Get up
    • Accept chastisement (remember, He will be with you)
    • "Clean up"
    • Worship God
    • See God's goodness which He does bring your way (manna, water, etc provided in wilderness wonderings)
Conclusion:
God's punishment is to bring us to repentance, not to crush us. . . when we repent, God repents.

Additional Study;
  1. What aspect of God's mercy can we relate to at any time? (Lamentations 3:22)
  2. Even in times of discipline, what is God's thought toward us? (Jeremiah 29:10-11)
  3. What is the only thing preventing us from receiving God's merciful provision? (Jeremiah 29:12-13)
  4. According to Psalm 145:14, who does the Lord uphold? Who does He raise up?
  5. According to Psalm 145:18-19, to whom does the Lord draw close? What does He do for them?
  6. No matter where we are in life, if we fear the Lord, what is our source of hope? (Psalm 147:11)

Psalm 90: The Plan B Prayer Lesson 8: "Applying Our Hearts to Wisdom"

Introduction: ". . .that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." (Psalms 90:12)

  1. What Is Wisdom?
    • The beginning is the fear of the Lord (Prov 9:10)
    • It is the principal thing (Prov 4:7)
    • It is available, truthful, understandable, valuable, practical, powerful effectual, personal, fruitful, spiritual, eternal, continual, critical, and wonderful! (Prov 8)
    • Summary of other's commentaries: it is "the application of God's revelation. . .the divine perspective applied to the situations and complexities of life."
  2. Why Do I Need Wisdom?
    • Because wisdom is precious (Prov 3:13)
    • To understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God (Prov 2:5)
    • To avoid being a fool (Prov 1:20-32).
  3. How Do I Get Wisdom? (Prov 2)
    • Incline my ear (v2)
    • Cry out for it (v3)
    • Look for it as for hidden treasure (v4)
    • Ask God for it (v6, James 1:5-7)
      • wisdom is available, just not immediate
Conclusion:
Once I have wisdom, I must apply it or it will not help at all. Wisdom applied will allow me to see beyond my trial to the result God is trying to achieve. Wisdom applied will help me to not ask for a problem to be removed, but rather, to have the right approach to my problem and have the ability to navigate in the midst of my problem.

In the morning it flourisheth, and growth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath" (Psalms 90:5-9)

It is more profitable to focus our time and attention on the day we have and the task at hand. Knowing that God is with us now and that He knows our future appointment in the air is sufficient for us to have the confidence to give our whole hearts to whatever God's will is for the moment."
