Who is God... H-Hallowed, Health of my countenance, Heir, Help, Highest, High Tower, Holy Spirit. Honorable, Hiding Place, High Priest, Holy

Old Testament: sacred; consecrated
New Testament: sacred, pure, blameless

Holy: 1. specially recognized as or declared sacred by religious use or authority; consecrated. 2. dedicated or devoted to the service of God, the church, or religion. 3. saintly, godly; pious, devout. 4. having a spiritually pure quality. 7. inspiring fear, awe, or grave distress.

Synonyms: divine, glorified, just, moral, perfect, pure, righteous, sublime, uncorrupt.

"Because God is Holy, He expects His people to be holy.
Since God is holy, He will do amazing and mighty things."

I. God is Holy

  • To Israil (Isaiah 43:15)
  • To the heathen (Ezekiel 39:7)
  • To Christians (IPeter 1:16)
  • (to be shown holy) in our praises (Psalm 22:3)
  • (to be shown holy) in our song (Psalms 71:22)
  • (to be shown holy) in our worship (Psalm 99:5, 9)
  • (to be shown holy) in our glorying (I Chronicles 16:10)
  • (to be shown holy) in our thanks (I Chronicles 16:35)
  • And will be for all of eternity (Revelation 4:8)

II. I am to be Holy
  • Because God is holy (Leviticus 19:2, 20:26)
  • By sanctifying myself (Leviticus 11:44-45, 21:8)
  • By putting away strange gods and inclining my heart toward God (Joshua 24:19)
  • By obeying His commandments (Deuteronomy 26:15-19)
  • By walking in His ways (Deuteronomy 28:9)
  • In my dress (Numbers 15:39-40)
  • In my eating habits (Deuteronomy 14:21)
  • In my mind (I Peter 1:13-16
III. When Before a Holy God . . .
  • Isaiah 6:1-8
    • seraphims covered their faces
    • Isaiah saw how undone he was
  • Leviticus 16:1-4, 21:1-6 (specifications for the priests)
  • Isaiah 17:7 (I am to look to my Maker with respect)
IV. Christians and Holiness Today
  • The part of God in us is the Holy Spirit (Acts 11:16-18, II Timothy 1:14)
  • The Holy Spirit sanctifies me (Romans 15:16)
  • I am not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)
  • I am to present myself holy before God (Romans 12:1)
  • The Holy Spirit gives the love of God in my heart (Romans 5:5)
  • I can abound in hope through the Holy Spirit's power (Romans 15:13)

Challenge:

  1. See God as the holy God He is.
  2. Yield to the Holy Spirit as He strives to make you holy.
  3. Let God's holiness affect your day, your ways, your world.
